Falling in love…..again
It occurred to me the other day that it’s been 8 years since I started doing CrossFit. (You think I’d be much better at it by now right?) So, since it’s spring, the birds are singing and love is in the air, I thought this topic was perfect.
Over those last 8 years of doing CrossFit I’ve done many different training styles. I’ve done Endurance stuff where I ran a Marathon, I’ve done strongman training and did a Strongman competition. I’ve done straight body building work outs. I’ve done Olympic style weightlifting and have lifted in Weightlifting meets. But over this time I have always incorporated some sort of CrossFit work outs, maybe not a lot, or maybe not enough but it was always there.
Recently after training for a weightlifting meet my body felt really beat up. My knees hurt, my shoulder hurt, my IT band hurt. I felt slow and inflexible. Every time I played on the floor with my boys getting off the floor I felt like an 80 year old man. I came to the conclusion that I wanted to feel better and be healthy.
So about 2 months ago I decided to start doing the class WOD’s 5 times a week. And after doing this for a couple weeks I have fallen in love with CrossFit again. The beauty of a one hour CrossFit class 5 times a week is that it gives the average person all you need to be fit and healthy. For those with aspirations of being competitive in CrossFit you will need more volume, strength work and gymnastic training. But the average person(me) doesn’t.
I completely respect those who choose to be competitive in Weightlifting, CrossFit or whatever. The vast amount of unseen hours, days and years of training it takes to be competitive, along with amazing amount of drive and persistence a person must have is inspiring. Many people are in awe and envious of the heavy weights they see people posting on Instagram or the crazy fast work out time in the CrossFit games. However, if those same people saw the amount of work and years upon years it took to get there, I think the feeling of envy might disappear and be replaced by a deeper understanding of the long journey it takes to be at that level.
So my CrossFit journey has come full circle in these 8 years. To some extent it’s taken me 8 years to rediscover CrossFit. To accomplish this I’ve had to to put my ego in check. Honestly it’s not an easy task for me to take my ego/pride out of the equation. It’s hard for me to not see a younger version of myself in the mirror remembering feats I once completed. I’m trying to come to terms with that, that’s not me anymore. My goals are now based upon me being healthy, balanced and fit. My reasons for wanting to be fit and healthy is for my wife and kids. Although I’m taking a healthy and balanced approach to my training I’m still going to push myself physically and mentally by setting tough but realistic goals.
We all have different reasons or factors that drive us in your lives. Picking goals are very important but finding your “reason/purpose” might be even more important. To be successful you need to fit your “reason/purpose” with a goal. Because when things get tough in your life and you are thinking of letting go of those goals,if that “reason/purpose” behind that goal is strong and rooted internally then most likely it will prevail. But If your “reason doesn’t fit you or is not coming from within you and it’s coming from someone or somewhere else then you probably won’t achieve your goal.
Answer this question, Why do you do CrossFit(work out)? What’s your goal and what’s your reason or reasons for both?
